Commemorating Darwin

Abstract

In 2009 there will be many celebrations of Charles Darwin's life and work --the year is simultaneously the bicentenary of his birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species--. The coming events will naturally focus on the rise of evolutionary science and consolidation of the modern scientific method as well as Darwin's still-controversial position in world ideologies. This illustrated address will look back at the various ways in which Darwin has been celebrated in previous anniversaries and explore, from a sociological perspective, his current status as an icon of science.
